tumblr's current business model isn't profitable and never will be and no amount of scolding from staff blogs or tumblr ad-free pay piggies is gonna fix that. don't let yourself be guilted into buying merch, badges or ad-free. you're throwing your money into a bottomless pit while the techbro ghouls running this website laugh about you at their next board meeting while applauding the shmucks coming up with new ideas on how to twitter- or tiktokify the website

''but tumblr needs to make money!!!''

if tumblr really wants its regular user onboard with keeping the website afloat then we should at least demand that they do the bare minimum in keeping the site functional. and right now, they're not even doing that. every change they've made lately has made the website/app worse. i should give my money to tumblr so what—they can make a more intrusive version of tumblr live? remove the chronical dashboard? come up with an even more transphobic way of doing content moderation? yeah, no thanks

terramythos

Tumblr has just been straight up flagging trans users as "mature content". Why in the fuck would I give them any benefit of the doubt or a single penny out of my pocket?

"Queerest place on the internet" these people are scornful of us at absolute BEST. fuck 'em.

“Perhaps you have forgotten. That’s one of the great problems of our modern world, you know. Forgetting. The victim never forgets. Ask an Irishman what the English did to him in 1920 and he’ll tell you the day of the month and the time and the name of every man they killed. Ask an Iranian what the English did to him in 1953 and he’ll tell you. His child will tell you. His grandchild will tell you. And when he has one, his great-grandchild will tell you too. But ask an Englishman—” He flung up his hands in mock ignorance. “If he ever knew, he has forgotten. ‘Move on!’ you tell us. ‘Move on! Forget what we’ve done to you. Tomorrow’s another day!’ But it isn’t, Mr. Brue.” He still had Brue’s hand. “Tomorrow was created yesterday, you see. That is the point I was making to you. And by the day before yesterday, too. To ignore history is to ignore the wolf at the door.”

John le Carré has not, at any point, been fucking around.

So in the context of Greek mythology the tripod is a special three legged stool that the oracle of Delphi sat on when she gave her prophecies. The stool itself was sacred. Very important.

And. There’s a myth where Heracles goes to the oracle of Delphi to ask a question of how to atone for something he did and the Oracle is like “I dunno dude figure it out yourself” and Heracles is so mad about this that he steals the tripod and Apollo himself is like “NO NOT MY TRIPOD” and comes down to snatch it back from him.

Now this is one of those myths that isn’t sourced in a lot of places. Pretty much only The Library by pseudo-Apollodorus I think? But we know it was a very popular and well known myth because artists really really liked painting and sculpting it

people seriously pretending EEAAO is overrated suddenly bc it swept awards? it swept awards largely because it is very very very good. I cried like someone who's just had a religious revelation BOTH times I watched it bc it touched something raw and real and beautiful but it was also just very, very funny. everyone's performance kills and the concept is creative and interesting and doesn't distract from the emotional core. you guys are just contrarian.

thedreadvampy

oh my god I just saw like 20 people solemnly agreeing that it "looked nice but was written for children" because it. because it. has. immature jokes about hot dog fingers and butt plugs and because the ultimate message is "be kind".

written for children

as if it isn't extremely written for adults dealing with adult problems that are keeping them from finding space in their life for joy and whimsy and silliness.

it is about a woman doing her taxes!!!!! it's about being weighed down by age and responsibility and the sense of the turns you missed in your life and being so exhausted from Being A Grown-up that you burn all the most important relationships in your life!!! it's about being a mother and a wife and a businesswoman and a human person!!!!! it's about trying and failing to hold it together in the face of your own well worn traumas and cycles of abuse for decades! it's incredibly specific to an adult audience!

the message of the film isn't even "be kind" as much as it's "be silly. fuck around. laugh it off. find joy in being ridiculous. fuck cynicism."

like I just. the amount of contrarianism you have to be huffing to fuck up your sense of media literacy this bad. there is a lot of childish humour and absurdity and silliness in the film because the thesis statement of the film is that silliness is profound and important. the message isn't "be kind" it's "find joy." literally it's so on the nose the character Evelyn is reaching for is Literally Called Joy.

like how do you watch a film where the triumph over nothingness is symbolised by sticking googly eyes on everything and think "oh, the reason this film is full of absurdities that seem immature is clearly an unconscious failure of the film to be mature or deep" rather than "oh the way this film is constructed is Specifically About This Explicit Theme that the whole film has been repeatedly reifying, that both stoic responsibility and chaotic nihilism are paths to self destruction and the real hard important work is allowing yourself to be earnestly naive, vulnerable and silly."

I do not understand. how multiple people seem to have decided the theme of the film was "be kind to one another" and not "engage authentically with the absurdity and joy of the world because nothing matters except what you make matter!!!!" Simone de Beauvoir did not die for this!!!!!!! kill both the sensible man and the nihilist and revel in the absurd!!!!!!!!!!

What’s going to make you happy right now? Is it some cake? Is it a nap? Is it calling your mom? Is it going on a drive and blasting music? Is it taking a bath? Is it reading a book?

Check in with yourself because you deserve that happiness, whatever it is.

I use this with my hospice patients a lot. Because “is there anything I can do to help?” rarely gets a response. But, “I’ll be here till 6:30 and would like to do one thing to make your room more comfortable before I head out” frequently does get an answer. Often something they deem “too small to bug anyone with” like closing the blinds so there’s no reflection on the tv, or repositioning their socks because the heels have wandered into the front and are uncomfortable, or they want ice cream before dinner today, or getting an extra blanket.

I also use this on myself. What’s one thing I could do to make my environment more comfortable right now? Does it cure my mental illness? Hell no! Does it make me feel more in control of my feelings and the world around me? You betcha!

ladynorbert

I’m going to try to apply this to my current situation, since right now things feel very out of control. Thanks!
